16 Books, Devotionals, and Resources for the Season of Lent

i’m three weeks into worshipping in an anglican community, into steeping myself in ancient practices of liturgies that are grounding and holy and beautiful. i didn’t expect to love it quite as much as i have, or to find it as moving and soothing and steadying for my soul, but it’s been that, and more. after so many years in a church that was big, loud, fast paced, and a full-on production, there’s been something so refreshing about getting back to the basics and simplifying the way i worship.

that’s a gift of the rhythm of the church calendar, too, i think — it grounds us in something both bigger and so much simpler, both more expansive and more concrete, more repetitive but also more rich. i find myself so grateful for the ways the seasons of lent and advent come around each year, and for how i find myself aligning with the themes of each.

i don’t quite know yet how i’ll engage with this season of lent, especially alongside and as part of a new community, but i’m hopeful and curious about what will come of this season of preparing for easter, beginning with the reminder that i come from dust and will one day return to it.

i have not read all of these resources, but have enjoyed several and found the rest recommended or shared with me in various ways, so i’ve gathered them in hopes they might be helpful for you to explore in your own journeys!
