How to Celebrate a Birthday during Quarantine

My 28th birthday is right around the corner (May 3!) and I have to admit, it feels a little (or a lot) weird this year. I’m social distancing solo, and the idea of spending my birthday totally alone feels really sad and lonely. So, in classic type A, enneagram 1 fashion, I’m working to make a plan to make it feel fun and special and celebratory!

I recently asked my Instagram friends for idea of how to celebrate, and wanted to share all of the suggestions I received:

  • self care (face masks, nails, reading, relaxation)

  • virtual happy hour or meeting with the people you would be spending it with

  • do a social distancing back of the car party with a few friends, have cake/drinks on a table

  • write down your birthday wishes

  • spend the night watching your favorite series/movies

  • bake cupcakes and decorate them with icing and sprinkles

  • dress up and play all the songs you love and sing along/dance around

  • bubble bath

  • read in the sun

  • virtual happy hour

  • cook a new recipe

  • make a yummy dessert

  • go on an adventure with a friend (6 ft apart) to a park or hiking trail

  • say yes to as much as possible

  • drive through/pick up your fave lunch/dinner

  • invite those that matter most to a zoom bday party

  • make a new “fancy” meal

  • decorate!

  • cake!

  • make something on your bday that you’ll always have (knit a kitchen towel, paint, etc)

  • buy fancy coupe glasses for champagne

  • if you have a google home, set alarms for it to play your fave songs at specific times

  • bake a cake

  • start the day off with some cheer and pour yourself a mimosa

  • Have a Disney channel themed zoom call and dress up

  • walk outside and listen to fun music

  • get a takeout bday dessert

  • read a new book

  • board games

  • full glamour day

My (loose) plan for the day is this:

  • Wear a fun outfit + do my hair/makeup/nails

  • Livestream church

  • Make a mimosa

  • Have a yummy brunch

  • FaceTime with friends/family

  • See my parents (play games, have a meal, do a bonfire?!)

  • Get outside for a walk/hike/picnic/hammocking sesh

  • Watch a favorite movie

  • Eat some kind of sweet treat (this was a fave from a past bday and might be my pick again…)

  • Journal about the year past and set goals for the year ahead

  • Make a plan for future celebrations with my people (maybe for my half bday in November!?)
